The Dr. Martin Luther King Celebration Committee of St. Johns County hosts St. Augustine's 39th Annual Commemorative Event on Monday, January 20, 2025, to celebrate the memory of Dr. King and the great influence he had in the passage of the Civil Rights Act in 1964. The celebration has two events.
- From 7:30 to 9:30 a.m., the committee will host a commemorative breakfast in the Virginia Room at Flagler College's Ringhaver Student Center. In 2024, the local commemoration will be based on the following quote by Dr. King, "America: Be True to What You Said on Paper." The keynote speaker is Dr. Patrick Coggins, PhD, JD, and Professor at Stetson University in Deland, Florida.
- At 10:30 a.m., a silent march will progress from St. Benedict the Moor Church at 86 MLK Avenue to the Plaza de la Constitución. The march commemorates the Dr. King-led marches in St. Augustine during the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s, and the events at the plaza will include music, song, and spoken word.
