Pickleball: A Guide to the Oldest City’s Fastest-Growing Sport

When, where, and how to play St. Augustine's newest favorite pastime.

Pickleball in St. Augustine: A Perfect Match

St. Augustine is becoming a hub for one of America’s fastest-growing sports — pickleball. The city offers an array of courts that cater to all skill levels. From public parks to private clubs, and indoor to outdoor facilities, there's a court for everyone, whether you're a seasoned player or just picking up a paddle for the first time. The availability of courts, some even set against oceanfront views, adds to the charm of playing. Whether you're a history buff, an adventurer, or just looking to for fun things to do while you visit the nation's oldest city, St. Augustine offers a unique opportunity to combine exercise, recreation, and discovery, making it the perfect vacation destination for pickleball enthusiasts.

What is Pickleball Anyway?

The sport may have a funny name, but players think pickleball is some serious fun. Played with a paddle that's bigger than ping pong but smaller than tennis, and a ball that looks suspiciously like a wiffle ball, the sport's compact court keeps the competitive pressure up without wearing down your joints. It’s fast, it’s social, and yes, you’ll probably hear the word "dink" more times than you ever thought possible.

Like tennis, the aim is to score points by sending the ball over the net, targeting your opponent’s side of the court. Players must serve underhand, with the ball landing diagonally across the net to start the rally. After the serve, both teams must let the ball bounce once before hitting it out of the air (volleying). Only the serving team can score, and if they fault, the serve switches sides. To win, your team must win by two, with games usually going up to eleven points. Oh, and beware of the "kitchen"—the no-volley zone right next to the net.
