THE COLLECTION
EDWIN AUGUSTUS MOORE: American Painter at the Lightner Museum features the great fire as well as other local scenes from the 1890s and will be supplemented with corresponding early photographs from the archives of the Saint Augustine Historical Society.
Mr. and Mrs. Mark Kopec of Southington, Connecticut and Saint Augustine, Florida have loaned their private collection of Edwin Augustus Moore paintings to be featured as a special exhibit in The Lightner Museum.
THE EXHIBIT
This exhibit will be opened for a limited time and will be displayed in a newly renovated gallery previously closed to the public
The exhibit will open February 1st and will close May 1st. The Lightner Museum is open daily from nine until five and free for St. Johns County residents.
THE ARTIST
Edwin Augustus Moore was an American painter, traveler, journalist, photographer and composer who used St. Augustine for many of his landscape watercolor subjects.
Moore is among the many tourists of the early nineteenth century who were attracted to Saint Augustine, Florida.
Moore did many sketches and finished paintings of Saint Augustine, which were featured in exhibits when he returned to his home in Connecticut.
During his stay Moore would witness the catastrophic fire of 1895 on the Saint Augustine bay front and would produce several works that record the event.
THE VENUE
