The St. Augustine Amphitheatre, in partnership with JaxLive, presents psychedelic garage rock groups The Black Angels with special guest Black Lips on their "The Birds and The Bees Tour" on the Backyard Stage of the St. Augustine Amphitheatre on Saturday, April 14, 2018.
The Black Angels came to national attention in 2006 with the release of their LP, Passover. The album was highly praised, called "the most powerful album of the year" by NPR. The band was described as "undisputed avatars of contemporary psychedelic rock," according to Austin City Limits. The praise continued with their 2008 release, Directions to See A Ghost, which Rolling Stone compared to "the drilling guitars of early Velvet Underground shows, [and] the raga inflections of late-show Fillmore jams."
Their live shows quickly elevated their music to new heights. The New York Times says they "play psychedelic rock as if the 1960s never ended, and they are absolute masters of it." They have toured with everyone from The Black Keys and Wolfmother to the Stone Age and Roky Erickson.
The Black Lips got their start in 1999 in a quiet suburb of Atlanta. The group started playing shows in the area as they developed their sound — garage rock with a good amount of blues, psychedelia, and punk added in. They released their first 7-inch in 2002, Ain't Coming Back. The Black Lips partnered with Sean Lennon and Yoko Ono for their ninth album, Satan's graffiti or god's art?, in 2016.
