The Ponte Vedra Concert Hall presents Grammy Award-winning Delbert McClinton and his band Self Made Men in concert on Friday, October 6, 2017.
Delbert McClinton's career has taken him through multiple genres, including country, blues, and indie, over a span of nearly five decades. With the release in 2017 of his 19th studio album, Prick of the Litter, he is adding some new styles to his signature rhythm and blues, including a jazz crooner sound inspired by Johnny Mercer and Nat King Cole.
According to Lyle Lovett, "If we could all sing like we wanted, we'd all sing like Delbert." McClinton has had numerous singles top the Billboard Hot 100 chart, Mainstream Rock Tracks and the Hot Country Songs chart. His highest ranking single was a duet with Tanya Tucker, "Tell Me About it" in 1992, which peaked at No. 4 on the country chart. McClinton's popularity carried over to the blues genre as well, with four of his albums since 2001 hitting No. 1 on the U.S. Blues chart. He was inducted into the Texas Heritage Songwriters Hall of Fame in March 2011.
McClinton says his current road band, Self Made Men, is the best band he's ever had. He describes the group: "Jack Bruno (drums) is amazing. He played with Joe Cocker and with Tina Turner for years. I've been harder on drummers than anybody in the world, but Jack is right there where I need him. Dana Robbins (saxophone) and Quentin 'Q' Ware (trumpet) punctuate the live performances in just the right places. James Pennebaker (guitar) is family. He's been playing with me off and on since he was nineteen. Mike Joyce (bass guitar), Kevin McKendree (piano), and Bob Britt (guitar) are among my best friends, in addition to being in the band. Mike and Kevin and I write together a lot. We wrote most of the songs on this album together."
