EMMA Concert - Philadanco Dance Co.

The Philadanco Dance Company, based out of Philadelphia, brings their electrifying performances to St. Augustine. This company comes to St. Augustine to entertain as well as to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act.

The dancers at Philadanco are professionals who have traveled the nation as well as the world. The troupe is known for their innovation, creativity and traditional African-American inspired dance routines.

The troupe is led by Joan Myers Brown and the performers include Rosita Adamo, Janine Beckles, Heather Benson, Elyse Browning, Cain Coleman, Dwayne Cook Jr, Tommie-Waheed Evans, Jennifer M. Jones, Victor Lewis Jr, Roxanne Lyst, Adryan Moorefield, Brittany Monachino, Courtney Robinson, Lauren P. White, and Ruka White.

The Performance (program subject to change):

Opens with By Way of the Funk choreographed by Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, which is a four part work that celebrates Philandancos 40 years of existence. The ballet honors the Funkadelics music and dancing style.

This performance is followed by, Moan, choreographed by Matthew Rushing and honors the musical genius of Nina Simone. The ballet illustrates the prolonged lament that could be heard in and through the passion of her timeless voice.

Intermission, and then Gate Keepers choreographed by Ronald K. Brown which is a ballet that pays homage to and celebrates the conscious continuity, interconnectedness, history, tradition and perseverance of dancers.

Followed by Enemy Behind the Gates choreographed by Christopher Huggins. This ballet is a work that was inspired by enemies that live within our midst. The performance is set to the music of Steve Reich.
