First Coast Opera presents Puccini's La Bohème in these fully-staged performances on December 30 and 31, 2023. On Saturday, December 30, the matinee begins at 2:00 p.m., preceded by a 1:00 p.m. pre-show talk. The performance begins on Sunday, December 31, at 7:30 p.m., with the optional pre-show talk at 6:30 p.m. Both pre-show discussions are open to all who attend the opera.
The opera premiered in Turin on February 1, 1896, under the direction of Arturo Toscanini, who was then 28. This opera about a poor seamstress and her friends has since become one of the most performed operas in the world.
La Bohème is directed by Helena Binder, who has directed two previous operas for First Coast Opera. This is a fully staged production with a full orchestra. Ganson Salmon performs as Rodolfo; Julia Radosz takes the role of Mimì, Steve Valenzuela performs as Marcello; McKenna Slack as Musetta; Thomas Gunther as Schaunard; Edwin Davis as Colline; Paul Houghtaling performs the role of Benoît and that of Alcindoro; and Esteban Cano portrays Parpignol.
