Flagler College: Honoring the Cheyenne and Arapaho Warriors

50 Sevilla Street
St. Augustine, FL 32084

In memory of the Cheyenne and Arapaho warriors imprisoned at Fort Marion (1875-1878), Flagler College is hosting a two-day event which includes educational sessions at the Ringhaver Student Center, Virginia Room, located at 50 Sevilla Street on Wednesday, November 16, 2022 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Thursday, November 17, 2022 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. There will be a keynote address at the Lewis Auditorium, located at 14 Granada Street, at 7:00 p.m.

During the conflicts in the 19th century, Fort Marion was a prison for Native Americans, in addition, the trauma accompanied by assimilation efforts led to Native American deaths in St. Augustine. Utilizing the art left behind to better comprehend history along with its importance in preserving Tribal heritage, the National Park service and Flagler College continue to work with Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma in order to learn more about the descendants of those who were imprisoned at Fort Marion.

Presenters include Reggie Wasana, Governor, Norene Starr, Special Projects Manager, Max Bear, Director of Historic Preservation Office, Denny MedicineBird and the Director of Language and Cultural Programs of the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma, Gordon Yellowman.

Closing the events on Thursday, November 17, 2022 at 7:00 p.m., Native American Affairs Liaison and Assistant to the Director in the National Park Service (NPS), Dorothy FireCloud will give a final speech of the evening at the Lewis Auditorium. FireCloud supports the NPS Director regarding issues that impact the Native American, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian communities.
