Limelight Theatre: "The Drowsy Chaperone"

Limelight Theatre presents The Drowsy Chaperone, beginning Friday, February 21, and continuing through Sunday, March 16, 2025. The Sunday shows begin at 2:00 p.m.; all the other shows begin at 7:30 p.m.

Written as an elaborate present and party entertainment for a friend's stag party, this Canadian play premiered in Toronto in 1999 and opened on Broadway in 2006. The play is a version of meta-theater in that one character breaks the fourth wall and speaks to the audience, acting as the narrator and a character in the play. The man in the chair opens the play in his dinghy apartment, talking to the audience about his favorite play, set in the 1920s. Shortly after he places the album of the show on the turntable, his apartment becomes a stage set and the cast of the musical appears with him on stage. 

The play received mixed reviews, and 13 Tony nominations, winning five of them, including Best Original Score and Best Book of a Musical.

Admission: All general admission tickets are $35.00, except on the first Thursday of each production (Preview Night) and on one Tuesday (Terrific Tuesday, March 11) when they are $25.00. Student "Rush Tickets" are $10.00, when available, 30 minutes before the curtain. Box office hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. It is possible to purchase tickets online.

When: From Friday, February 21 through Sunday, March 16, 2025. Sunday shows are matinees and start at 2:00 p.m. The performances on all other days begin at 7:30 p.m. 

Where: 11 Old Mission Avenue, St. Augustine, Florida 32084. There is free parking behind the theater—enter from Old Mission Avenue and drive to the back to park in the lot on Bernard Street. Use the main entrance.
