The Ponte Vedra Concert Hall presents SOJA with The Green and Leilani Wolfgramm in concert on Tuesday, February 17, 2015.
The music of SOJA (formerly known as Soldiers of Jah Army) blends reggae, go-go, D.C. hardcore, Latin, rock and hip-hop, and their albums have sold more than 200,000 copies. The band has headlined shows in over 20 countries, generated over three million Facebook fans and and 65 million YouTube views. SOJA has toured with Dave Matthews Band, Incubus, 311 and has appeared at many major festivals, including Bonnaroo.
According to SOJA's lead singer, Jacob Hemphill, "Our goal as a band is to stick up for the human race. We see the world and we try to make it better in the limited time we have here." With such a clear philosophy behind their music, this DC-area band has been building a huge fan base since the group of friends started to play together back in middle school.
The Green's latest album, Hawai'i '13, opens with a chant, which is an important part of Hawaiian culture. As guitarist/vocalist/songwriter JP Kennedy explains it, "It's a way to start something important. When we chant, we ask for blessings, knowledge, and guidance so that we can be 'pono' or righteous in whatever we do." The album goes on to describe a journey through Hawaiian life and music in 2013, reflecting both The Green's musical upbringing and their vision for the future of Hawai'i and its music.
Five songwriters make up The Green: JP Kennedy, Zion Thompson, Caleb Keolanui, Ikaika Antone, and Brad Watanabe, and all of them (excluding basssist/multi-instrumentalist Watanabe) take turns on lead vocals.
Their debut album was released in 2010 to critical and commercial acclaim, and was awarded iTunes Best Reggae Album of the Year. The group has toured all over the U.S., including appearances at many well-known festivals including Vans Warped Tour, Wakarusa, Sierra Nevada World Music Festival and California Roots Festival.
