(904) 484-4960

North of Downtown St. Augustine

The St. Augustine Community Chorus presents their concert, "God's Trombones" in recognition and celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This concert will feature music from the past century including songs from Scott Joplin, Duke Ellington, and George Gershwin's popular, "Porgy and Bess."

Highlights of the Concert: James Weldon Johnson's God's Trombones: Seven Negro Sermons in Verse.  This 1927 book of poems was patterned after traditional African-American religious oratory. It will be narrated by Dr. Dorothy Headley Israel and Patric Robinson. Also, there will be a power-point presentation, "The St. Augustine Experience," to accompany the chorus and soloists as they sing the songs of the St. Augustine Foot Soldiers as they prepared for and participated in 1964 civil rights demonstrations.  The program concludes with a medley of "Lift Every Voice and Sing" and "My Country 'Tis of Thee".

This concert will be led by the St. Augustine Community Chorus' director, Kathleen Vande Berg. She has put together a spectacular concert that will feature talented guest artists including Patric Robinson, as narrator and baritone, Mani Cadet as tenor, Jamilia Wells as Soprano, and Dr. Dorothy Israel as narrator.

The concert will emphasize the tremendous contribution to music that came from the talents of the African-American community through the years.
