City Gate and San Marco Hotel
The Old City Gate and San Marco Hotel in St. Augustine
A sketch of the City Gate in St. Augustine and a view of the San Marco Hotel in the background. The City Gate was completed as part of a fortification wall which surrounded the nation's oldest city. Dating back to 1808, the City Gate is made of coquina, the same building material used on the fort. The two pillars still mark where the gate stood at the entrance into downtown St. Augustine at the north end of St. George Street.
