150 students from Richard J. Murray High School held a peaceful protest against segregation at the Hotel Ponce de Leon, now Flagler College. Police were called, and they arrested most of the students. Electric cattle prods and police dogs were used to intimidate the protestors.

The Southern Christian Leadership Conference is a civil rights organization that was founded by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and other Alabama activists. This was public announcement by Dr. Robert B. Hayling that basically meant "the King is coming to town."

During an 'as usual' day of picketing for youth demonstrators in St. Augustine, sixteen teenagers were arrested at four different lunch counters in the city. Among them are four young people now known as 'The St. Augustine Four."

St. Augustine radio station WFOY reported in their morning show that Black leaders in St. Augustine are arming themselves in the battle for equal rights. While the segment only aired once, its effects were strong and rumors quickly spread. People started to believe that Dr. R. B. Hayling threatened that "unless St. Augustine integrates right now, we will come out shooting." In reality, Dr. Hayling told a reporter for United Press International that because "passive resistance is no good in the face of violence ...

An unnamed Black citizen who attended a meeting between NAACP and St. Augustine city officials on June 16 receives an anonymous threat to "Watch out for the KKK." This was anonymously reported to the Jacksonville FBI office.
