Black History & St. Augustine's Catholic Records

La Florida is a particularly valuable resource for people studying Black History in America.

The Catholic Church early records in St. Augustine are a major source for historians studying the lives of African-descended people in the United States. In an era where most Black people in this country were considered as property, the Spanish Catholic authorities in Florida were officially recording their baptisms, marriages, and deaths.
