Today is the Commemorative Re-enactment of the Landing of Juan Ponce de Leon featuring re-enactment ceremonies throughout the day along the bayfront. This is the 500th anniversary of Ponce de Leon's April 3, 1513 landing on the shores of his La Florida. Activities begin at 8:15 a.m. with a ceremonial gathering at the Fountain of Youth Archeological Park. The commemorative landing is at 9 a.m. on the bayfront at the foot of the Bridge of Lions with cannon fire and musket drills. At 10 a.m., a ceremonial wreath laying takes place with the the mayor of St. Augustine and the mayor of Santervas, Spain, (birthplace of Ponce), at the Ponce de leon statue, then at 10:30 a.m. there will be a press interviews with dignitaries in the Plaza. A commemorative mass will be held at 11 a.m. at the Cathedral and at 12:30 p.m. a commemorative U.S postage stamp will be unveiled at Flagler College's Lewis Auditorium with presenters, Florida Secretary of State, Kenneth Detzner; Flagler College President Dr. William Abare; Florida Senator Bill Nelson and Ponce de Leon, portrayed by actor Chad Light.
