First Coast Opera opens its 2013-2014 Season with a performance of Hansel and Gretel. This opera was composed in the 1890s by Engelbert Humperdink based on the Grimm brothers' story. This fairy-tale opera is a fun, family friendly performance that serves a great introductory opera.
The story: Hansel and Gretel are brother and sister and the main characters of the opera. They venture into the haunted forest to collect strawberries for their mother. Here they encounter the gingerbread house, and even though they know the forest is evil they nibble away on the cakes and sweets that adorn the house. The wicked witch forces the children in her house and tries to fatten up Hansel, but he cleverly deceives her. The children devise a plan to escape the house and end up freeing the other gingerbread children!
