Educational and interesting presentations focusing on the 50th Anniversary of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.
Flagler Colleges Spring Community Lecture Series will host local experts and Flagler College professors who will focus on the 50th Anniversary of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.
Dr. Tom Graham's lecture is titled "Headwaiter Frank P. Thompson - Race Pride Man". Mr. Thompson was the headwaiter of the Hotel Ponce de Leon and he was a great leader among the black employees of Henry Flagler's hotel. Thompson was also of national importance within the black hotel waiters union. Thompson was recognized as the "Commander of the Dining Room" for his pride and excellent ethics.
He challenged his waiters to be a "race pride man" like him and strive to reach their full potential. Thompson was also one of the original members of the most successful black professional baseball team of the day, the Cuban Giants. This interesting and educational lecture will illuminate race relations of the 50s and 60s.
