The Florida Agriculture Museum offers a free presentation, "Florida Agriculture during the Gilded Age," on Wednesday, December 17, 2014, at 2 p.m., at the Caldwell Dairy Barn on the grounds of the museum.
Charles Tingley, Senior Research Llibrarian for the St. Augustine Historical Research Library, will talk about how agriculture in Florida grew and changed in the late 19th century, when Henry Flagler's railroad brought some of the nation's wealthiest and most influential leaders to Florida, especially to Flagler's luxury hotels in St. Augustine.
The burgeoning population, of both hotel guests and the people who provided service to the hotels and who lived in the surrounding area, required a steady local source of fresh produce. Flagler persuaded his cousin, Thomas Horace Hastings, to develop a farm to meet those needs, and as a result there was a significant expansion in farming during this period.
Admission: Free, but a donation at the door to help support the museum is appreciated.
When? Wednesday, December 17, 2014, at 2 p.m.
