In celebration of Women's History Month, the Women's Exchange of St. Augustine hosts a lunch and learn about Harriet Beecher Stowe's Influence in St. Augustine.
Brittany Cohill, Executive Director of the Mandarin Museum and Historical Society shares information on Harriet Beecher Stowe's Florida ties. Mrs. Stowe's articles about Florida's natural wonders impacted the area's early tourism industry. In addition, while Mrs. Stowe stayed in St. Augustine, she joined women who worked with the Sisters of St. Joseph, teaching imprisoned Native Americans. The sisters were working at the behest of Richard Henry Pratt, who developed his plan of cultural assimilation while in St. Augustine.
