The Women's Exchange of St. Augustine hosts a lunch and learn about Richard Henry Pratt's time in St. Augustine.
Sarah Kathryn Pitcher Hayes, PhD, Professor of English at Seminole State University, discusses Richard Henry Pratt. Pratt formed his philosophy of cultural assimilation of Native Americans while he was in St. Augustine. Pratt retired from the military as a brigadier general. In St. Augustine, he supervised prisoners of war — the Native Americans who were held at what was then called Fort Marion. Ultimately, the ideas and philosophy he developed here led to the formation of the Federal Native American boarding and reservation schools.
