The St. Augustine Royal Family performs the Royal Knighting Ceremony every year during Easter Week to bestwow knighthood upon residents who have been selected based on their good civic deeds.

St. Augustine residents portray the royal family in full costume and conduct the ceremony. The current Royal Family Queen Mariana presents each honoree with a medal, a plaque, and a sword-to-shoulder "knighting." The heritage event takes place from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, April 14, 2025, in the Cathedral Basilica West Courtyard.

Who is the Royal Family?

The Royal Family is comprised of residents who represent Spain's Royal Family in 1672 — Queen Mariana, King Juan Carlos, and Princess Margarita Maria. This family was in power at the time the Castillo de San Marcos was commissioned. St. Augustine's Royal Family travels to appearances in period dress to represent the city and to promote its history and heritage.
