(904) 501-5092A Classic Theatre presents "Threads of Silver and Gold: Women of the Panama Canal," with performances on select days from October 22 through October 30, 2015, at the Pioneer Barn at Fort Menendez. The play is a compelling portrayal of life in the Panama Canal Zone, told through the stories of the women who arrived there from England, the U.S., and the West Indies during the canal's construction.
The show was created in honor of the 100th anniversary of the opening of the Panama Canal on August 15, 1914. The canal was opened just a few years after Panama gained its independence, and this was a period of trying work conditions and an uncertain political climate between the U.S. and Colombia.
"Threads of Silver and Gold" celebrates the role of women during the tumultuous period of the canal's construction. The play features fifteen colorful fictional characters and one of the best-known historical characters in the U.S. -- Teddy Roosevelt himself. The characters are intensely varied in personality and background, and the way they interact despite such cultural differences is fascinating to watch.
Deborah B. Dickey is directing this production of "Threads of Silver and Gold," and has assembled a talented cast from the St. Augustine area. This is A Classic Theatre production.
On Sunday, October 25, following the 3 p.m. matinee showing, local author Robert W. Dickey will sign copies of his book, Goliath of Panama: The Life of Soldier and Canal Builder William Luther Sibert. In Goliath, Robert W. Dickey chronicles the influential work of engineer Sibert and his contribution to the most demanding part of the Panama Canal's construction: Gatun Locks.
