Chabad of St. Johns presents the annual Chanukah Helicopter Gelt Drop and Menorah Lighting to mark the celebration of Chanukah, at 6:15 p.m. on Thursday, December 7, at Nocatee Splash Park.
The event begins with the lighting of a giant glowing menorah and the hope of spreading light and warmth to all. Afterward, a helicopter will drop 10,000 chocolate coins for children to collect. There will be a Chanukah Light Show over Splash Park, live music, and a variety of delicious Chanukah treats.
Lighting the eight-branch candelabra known as the menorah is a central part of the eight-day Chanukah festivities, which celebrate the re-dedication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. It represents the "illumination of the house without," meaning that anyone who passes the house can be reminded of the miracle of the holiday.
Since the 1970s, the worldwide Chabad Hasidic movement has initiated public menorah lightings in open public places in many countries. Chabad of St. Johns County takes part in that global effort by sponsoring this ceremony.
