The St. Augustine Film Society presents The Monk and the Gun (2023) on Sunday, October 27, 2024, at 7:00 p.m. at the Waterworks.

Written and directed by Pawo Choyning Dorji, this playful drama is set in 2006 — a pivotal year when the Kingdom of Bhutan began its transition to democracy. As a monk is sent off to the mountainside, he encounters an American in search of an antique, 19th-century rifle. The film sends a message about embracing change without erasing the past.

On October 15th, 1874, Lighthouse Keeper, William R. Russell lit the St. Augustine Lighthouse for the first time. One hundred and fifty years later, the 165-foot lighthouse still serves as a navigational aid for ships and pleasure boats at sea.

To celebrate their sesqui-centennial, the St. Augustine Lighthouse and Maritime Museum hosts five days of events, from Monday, October 14, through Friday, October 18. Most are open to the public, some require a fee, and others require an RSVP.
