The Historic St. Augustine Research Institute presents a spring speaker series on two evenings, March 7 and 14, 2024, at the Governor's House Cultural Center and Museum, 48 King Street in St. Augustine. For the second event, Susan Richbourg Parker, Ph.D. will present St. Augustine Revives its Spanish Past: The 1924 Visit to Avilés, on Thursday, March 14, at 7:00 p.m.
Dr. Parker, tells the story of the City of St. Augustine's representatives, who traveled by ocean liner in 1924 to visit our Sister City of Avilés, Spain. One hundred years ago, Avilés, the birthplace of Pedro Menendez de Avilés, invited Florida citizens to strengthen ties between Florida and Spain, and therefore also between the U.S. and Spain. Most of the delegates were from St. Augustine, and this event was the first of several official visits between the two cities.
